The wage was poor and often not paid. Extra money was made by taking in weekly student boarders - who also needed feeding. McKenzie's accounts give us an idea of Mr. Clark, the first Schoolmaster's diet:
15 JANUARY, 1855
| On the 12th of June, McKenzie sold "To Mr. Clark, the schoolmaster, a coffin with mounting." Mrs. Clark had died! | ![]() |
This was a sad event in the community. Mrs. Clark had taught the girls sewing and needlework as part of a proper girl's education.

Mr. Clark appears to have had an odd diet after her passing. Accounts for September, 1855 list his purchases as follows:
